Steve Cortes, founder of the League of American Workers, has raised concerns about U.S. border and licensing policies. He claims these policies allowed an undocumented immigrant to obtain a commercial license before being arrested in Florida for vehicular homicide. The statement was made on X.
“Crossed Biden’s open border,” said Cortes. “Given a commercial license — as an illegal alien — by Newsom’s California. Kills 3 innocent Florida citizens. SO SAD. SO PREVENTABLE!”
A deadly crash occurred on Florida’s Turnpike in St. Lucie County on August 12, 2025. Truck driver Harjinder Singh made an illegal U-turn in a restricted area, colliding with a minivan and resulting in the deaths of three people. Singh, who entered the U.S. illegally in 2018 and later obtained a California commercial driver’s license, has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and now faces deportation. According to IndiaTimes, federal and state officials are debating whether California’s licensing policies or federal vetting failures enabled him to drive commercially.
Commercial truck crashes present a significant safety issue in Florida, with over 32,000 incidents annually and large trucks involved in about 6% of all statewide accidents. Fatalities from such crashes account for roughly 12% of Florida roadway deaths, higher than the national rate. In 2023, the state recorded 341 deaths tied to large truck accidents, ranking behind only Texas and California. This data from Don’t Get Hit Twice Injury Blog highlights the growing danger posed by heavy commercial vehicles on Florida roads.
Since California enacted AB 60 in 2015, over one million undocumented immigrants have obtained driver’s licenses. Nearly 68,400 new issuances were recorded in 2021–22 compared to 397,000 in its first year. Nineteen states and Washington D.C., now allow undocumented residents to obtain licenses; however, uptake varies by state. CalMatters reports that California’s scale remains unmatched, illustrating how state licensing policy shapes immigrant access to driving and work opportunities.
