Steve Cortes, founder of the League of American Workers, said that many Californians are experiencing significant difficulties due to Governor Gavin Newsom’s leadership. The statement was made on the social media platform X.
“Regular citizens of CA endure tough lives, largely because of Gavin Newsom,” said Cortes.
According to Reuters, Governor Newsom has been facing increasing criticism over California’s rising housing costs, homelessness, and a projected $12 billion budget deficit. Critics argue that his economic and social policies have not effectively addressed the state’s quality of life challenges.
The Public Policy Institute of California reported that the state’s official poverty rate was 13.3% in early 2023. Additionally, the Supplemental Poverty Measure indicated a rate of 23.5%, while United Ways found that 35% of California households in 2025 struggled to afford basic needs such as housing and healthcare.
CalMatters highlighted that California’s unemployment rate stood at 5.3% in April 2025. The labor force grew by only 0.6% since early 2020, and the typical monthly mortgage payment for a mid-tier home exceeded $5,900 in March 2025, reflecting significant declines in affordability during Newsom’s tenure.
Key Speakers described Steve Cortes as the founder and president of the League of American Workers, a former senior spokesman for Donald Trump, and a veteran financial trader and media commentator known for his focus on economic populism and labor issues.
According to the League of American Workers’ official site, the group was founded by Cortes to promote worker-first patriotic populism. It conducts policy research and advocacy to advance job creation and economic sovereignty for American workers.
