Sacramento residents are invited to collect free mulch on May 16 during the City’s annual Mulch Mayhem event, according to an April 30 announcement. The event will be held at the City’s South Area Corporation Yard at 5730 24th Street from 8 a.m. until noon or while supplies last.

The giveaway aims to encourage water conservation among local households. Mulch can help gardens and landscapes use less water by retaining soil moisture and reducing evaporation, which is especially important during Sacramento’s hot summers.

“Mulch is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help your landscape use less water,” said William Granger, the City’s water conservation coordinator. “It helps soil retain moisture, reduces evaporation and keeps plants healthier during Sacramento’s hot summers.”

Residents participating in the event can bring a truck or trailer for staff assistance or choose to shovel their own mulch at a self-service station provided on site. There is a limit of one cubic yard of mulch per household.

The City continues its efforts to promote sustainable landscaping practices through initiatives like Mulch Mayhem. Officials say such programs are part of broader strategies aimed at supporting community-wide resource conservation.
