The Goleta Police Department has announced it will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday, August 15, 2025. The operation will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the City of Goleta.
Checkpoint sites are selected based on data related to DUI crashes and arrests in the area. The main goal of these checkpoints is to increase public safety by discouraging impaired driving, rather than making arrests.
During the checkpoint, deputies will monitor drivers for signs of impairment from alcohol or drugs. “The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired,” according to the department.
Authorities also remind residents that impairment can result not only from alcohol but also from prescription or over-the-counter medications. Drivers are urged to follow usage instructions and heed warnings about operating vehicles after taking such substances. The department notes that while marijuana use may be legal in some contexts, it remains illegal to drive under its influence. “Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or ‘operating heavy machinery,’ which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal,” officials stated.
Those charged with a first-time DUI offense face significant consequences in California, including an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties as well as license suspension.
Funding for this program comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Law enforcement services for Goleta are provided under contract with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office.
