As Labor Day approaches, the Goleta Police Department is urging drivers to prioritize safety and avoid impaired driving during end-of-summer celebrations. The department is reminding the public to make responsible choices, especially when it comes to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The Goleta Police Department has shared several tips for safe travel: plan ahead by arranging a designated driver or using ride-sharing services if you intend to drink; always wear a seatbelt; stay alert and avoid distractions such as texting or eating while driving; adhere to speed limits; watch for pedestrians and bicyclists who may be out enjoying outdoor activities; and take regular breaks on long trips to prevent fatigue.
To enhance community safety, deputies will be patrolling through Labor Day (September 1), looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence. This effort is part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 12,429 fatalities in drunk-driving crashes in 2023, which equates to one death every 42 minutes. Impairment can result not only from alcohol but also from prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and cannabis products. Drivers are advised that if they plan on consuming any substances that could impair their ability to drive safely—including medications with warning labels—they should let someone sober drive instead. Anyone witnessing potentially impaired driving is encouraged to call 9-1-1.
Police services in Goleta are provided by the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office. Funding for these enforcement efforts comes from a grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“Plan Ahead: If you know you’ll be drinking, arrange for a designated driver, use a ride-sharing service, taxi or public transportation.
Buckle Up: Wearing a seatbelt is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself in the event of a crash.
Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as texting or eating while driving. Keep your focus on the road.
Follow Speed Limits: Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.
Watch for Pedestrians and Bicyclists: With more people enjoying outdoor activities, be extra vigilant and share the road responsibly.
Take Breaks: If you’re traveling long distances, take regular breaks to rest and avoid fatigue.”
