Governor Gavin Newsom visited Los Angeles to support communities affected by federal immigration enforcement. He urged President Trump to stop deploying soldiers in the area and introduced new “know your rights” resources for residents.
Newsom met with business owners and faith leaders, discussing the economic impact of immigration raids. “Enough is enough – Stephen Miller and Trump’s chaos campaign needs to end now,” said Governor Newsom. He criticized the actions as violations of constitutional rights that harm neighborhoods and businesses.
During his visit, Newsom spoke with restaurant owners at Cuernavaca’s Grill in Bell about how these policies affect small businesses. He also visited a church in Downey recently targeted by federal agents.
According to a UCLA Anderson forecast, Trump’s policies could negatively impact California’s economy, potentially contracting it due to global tariffs and immigration raids. Mass deportations might cost the state $275 billion and reduce tax revenue by $23 billion annually.
Undocumented immigrants contributed significantly to state taxes in 2022, with potential increases if they could work legally.
The militarization of Los Angeles has raised concerns over federal tactics violating laws and constitutional rights. The Governor’s Office released factsheets offering guidance on dealing with immigration actions safely.
For over a month, approximately 4,000 National Guard members have been stationed in Los Angeles without clear missions or timelines for return. Newsom called for their immediate withdrawal: “California urges Trump and the Department of Defense to end this theatrical deployment.”
The Governor emphasized that enforcing immigration laws should not violate rights or disrupt communities.
