Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a proclamation declaring July 4, 2025, as “Independence Day” in California. The proclamation emphasizes the historical significance of Independence Day and acknowledges the ongoing efforts to achieve equality, freedom, and opportunity for all Americans.

In his proclamation, Governor Newsom stated: “Each year on the Fourth of July, we celebrate the day our founders stood up to tyranny and formed a new nation founded on the principles of equality, freedom, and opportunity.” He noted that although progress has been made since America’s founding, challenges remain. He remarked on “relentless attacks across the country” aimed at undermining fundamental rights and freedoms.

Governor Newsom reaffirmed California’s commitment to these founding ideals by stating: “Today and every day, California reaffirms our commitment to fully realizing our nation’s founding ideals… We will never back down from the fight to protect freedom.”

He also called attention to those who have contributed significantly to safeguarding liberty and equality. As he put it: “As we celebrate July Fourth, let us pay tribute to those in uniform, our civil rights leaders, advocates, and others who have made great strides.”

The proclamation concludes with Governor Newsom officially designating July 4 as Independence Day in California. It was signed by him on July 1st with Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber attesting.
