San Diego State University’s softball team secured a 3-1 victory over Fresno State on May 1. The Aztecs improved their record to 24-25 overall and 9-15 in the Mountain West Conference, while Fresno State dropped to 22-23 overall and 11-13 in conference play.
The game saw both teams hold each other scoreless through the first three innings. Fresno State took an early lead in the fourth inning when pitcher Alyssa Ramirez doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Olivia Hill. However, San Diego State responded in the fifth inning with singles from Kiara Cisneros and Kaila Pollard, setting up a three-run home run by Ignacio that accounted for all of the Aztecs’ runs.
Faith Jordan came in as relief pitcher for San Diego State in the bottom of the fifth inning after a leadoff walk, retiring three consecutive batters including one strikeout. Jordan continued her strong performance by striking out Ramirez during a perfect sixth inning and then closing out the seventh with another set of outs, earning her first save during a Mountain West game this season. According to team records, her previous save was recorded earlier this year in a win against San Diego.
San Diego State threatened to extend its lead in the seventh inning with singles from Cisneros, Lala Macario, and Pollard but could not add more runs as Ramirez managed to escape further damage for Fresno State.
The Aztecs will conclude their season with one final matchup against Fresno State on Saturday at 1 p.m., which will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
