On June 3, 2025, the Sheriff’s Office Programs Unit, in collaboration with Allan Hancock College, recognized the academic achievements of 55 incarcerated students at the Northern Branch Jail (NBJ) in Santa Maria, California. These individuals successfully completed various college courses offered at the facility.
The honorees included students who completed courses such as HUSV 111: Addiction, Treatment & Recovery; FCS 131: Life Management; BUS 389: Customer Service Series; ECS 101: Child, Family & Community; and BUS 130: Consumer and Family Finance.
Allan Hancock College provides a rotating selection of courses at NBJ while Santa Barbara City College offers similar programs at the Main Jail. Since March 2022, over 70 college courses have been made available to inmates at NBJ. The education initiative aims to foster positive outcomes such as increased confidence, employment prospects, and civic responsibility among participants.
Sheriff Bill Brown attended the ceremony to address graduates and present certificates of course completion. He stated, “I’m proud of the strong partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and Allan Hancock College, which brings diverse educational programs to the Northern Branch Jail. These classes give incarcerated individuals the tools they need to grow personally and professionally, pursue meaningful careers, and successfully reintegrate into society. This kind of transformation not only changes lives—it lowers repeat offenses and strengthens the safety and well-being of our communities.”
