Avinash Iyer led the San José State men’s golf team on May 4 with a bogey-free round of 68 at the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship, placing the Spartans in sixth after two rounds at Omni Tucson National Resort. The team posted a combined score of 18-under-par (558) and remains in contention among twelve teams.
Iyer’s performance included four birdies and no dropped shots, putting him tied for eighth individually with a total score of six under par (138) over two days. His consistent play provided momentum for the Spartans as they head into the final round.
Other members of the lineup also contributed to the team’s strong showing. Ivan Barahona shot a two-under-par 70 with four birdies, tying for thirteenth place at five under (139). Jed Dy matched Barahona’s score, using three birdies to reach three under par (141), tying for twenty-fourth place. Keshav “KC” Mungali made an eagle during his round of 73 and is tied for twenty-seventh at two under par (142). Christian Maggard finished with a score of even-par (144), including four birdies, placing him in a tie for thirty-fifth.
The depth across San José State’s roster was evident as four players recorded birdies on holes No. 2 and No. 8 during Monday’s second round.
The Spartans will return to Omni Tucson National Resort on Tuesday for the final round of the championship.
