California Golden Bears quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele received recognition on Wednesday for his performance in the team’s 38-35 victory over No. 21 SMU, earning the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.
In addition to this honor, Sagapolutele was named the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week and also took home both Rookie and Quarterback of the Week honors from the ACC.
During the game against SMU, Sagapolutele completed 31 of 40 passes for 330 yards and four touchdowns without throwing an interception. Both his passing yards and touchdown passes marked career highs.
Sagapolutele has started his collegiate career with 12 consecutive games of at least 200 passing yards. He is currently the only Power 4 player and just the second FBS player ever to achieve this milestone at the beginning of a college career. The other player to reach this mark is David Piland from Houston, who had a streak of 14 games between 2010 and 2012.
For the season, Sagapolutele has completed 288 out of 453 pass attempts for a total of 3,117 yards and thrown for 17 touchdowns. His completion total leads all quarterbacks in the ACC and ranks fifth nationally. In passing yards, he is third in his conference and stands fifteenth among all players nationwide. With these numbers, Sagapolutele’s yardage places him sixth on California’s all-time single-season list.
Sagapolutele’s achievements come as he continues to break records early in his college football career with California Golden Bears Men’s Football.
