Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said on May 12 that he felt gratitude for both the team and its fans following a close 115-110 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, which resulted in the Lakers’ elimination from the playoffs.
Redick addressed the atmosphere at Crypto.com Arena, highlighting how supportive and energetic the crowd was despite challenging circumstances. He said, “I think when the season ends, there’s always, I would say a whirlwind of emotions. Certainly, feeling a sense of gratitude for our players, the Lakers, our fanbase.”
Redick described moments during Game 4 when it would have been easy for both players and fans to lose hope but noted their resilience. “Really liked that you’ve seen these 3-0 games before, and I thought there were two different times during the game where our team could’ve gave in, could’ve let go of the rope. We didn’t. I thought the crowd was awesome tonight. I’ve been part of these on both sides where it’s a 3-0, and you’re playing on the road, or you’re playing at home, and the crowd can just not be great… And the crowd was awesome tonight. Our fans are awesome.”
The game saw fluctuations as Los Angeles overcame an early run by Oklahoma City but ultimately lost their lead in the final quarter. Redick also reflected on injuries that affected key players like Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves during crucial parts of their season.
Reflecting on his experience with this year’s roster through adversity and change—such as player injuries—Redick said: “This is my 17th year being part of an NBA team… Every team I’ve been a part of… sometimes that organism is healthy and thriving… sometimes that organism can get really sick. And we experienced all of that this year.” He added about his emotional connection to coaching: “I love my wife and kids, but that’s why. I didn’t want our season to end. I wanted to keep this thing going. I enjoyed every bit of this year.”
As they look ahead to next season with potential roster changes looming due to free agency decisions affecting half their squad according to Redick’s comments after Game 4—the future remains uncertain but hopeful.
