The Los Angeles Lakers signed Nick Smith Jr. to a standard, two-year NBA contract on April 15, just before the end of the 2025-26 season. The move came after waiving Kobe Bufkin and was made so that Smith would be eligible for the playoff roster.
Smith had been playing on a two-way contract, but with guards Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves expected to miss the start of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, head coach JJ Redick said there was a clear need in the backcourt that Smith could fill. “Obviously a difficult decision. Drew (Timme) has been awesome for us. Frankly, we’re missing two of our primary ball-handlers,” Redick said. “We need Nick, we need his shooting as well. A lot of discussion, a lot of debate over the last few days about that.”
Redick explained that while Timme had shown promise late in the season and could have filled an open roster spot, Smith’s skills were better suited for what the team currently needs as they prepare to face the Houston Rockets in round one—a team known for its physical play and size advantage.
On a roster featuring guards like Doncic, Reaves, Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard, opportunities for younger players such as Smith can be limited. However, he has demonstrated moments where he was able to create shots and act as an on-ball threat.
As Los Angeles prepares for their playoff series against Houston—who are seen as having defensive strengths—the addition of Smith is not expected to dramatically change their chances but will provide necessary depth at guard if called upon during games.
After signing his new deal with Los Angeles ahead of postseason play, Smith said he looked forward to finally being part of playoff action rather than just watching from afar.
