Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick said on May 12 that he wants the team’s core trio of Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and LeBron James to return for the next season. The statement was made during an end-of-season press conference with general manager Rob Pelinka.
The future of the three players is uncertain as both James and Reaves are expected to become unrestricted free agents this summer. Redick emphasized his desire for continuity, saying, “I’ll repeat what Rob said. Of course we want that core to be back together.” He added that each player had to make sacrifices throughout the season and highlighted their growth over the year: “I also think for all three of those guys, and it’s crazy to say it about LeBron, but all three of those guys showed a lot of growth this year.”
Redick spoke about Doncic’s improved fitness level and leadership skills after returning from injury. He said, “He was great throughout the season, still in fantastic shape six weeks after an injury. But he’s also grown as a leader… Austin grew in that regard. LeBron… being challenged to and volunteering to accept a different role in Year 23—that is incredible.” According to Redick, these changes helped drive a strong stretch where the team went 16-2.
Despite progress late in the season, questions remain about how Los Angeles will build out its roster if both James and Reaves receive significant contracts this offseason. The team struggled with depth during its playoff series against Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Lakers have indicated they want both players back next year. In particular, there is mutual interest between Reaves and the organization in continuing their partnership.
