California track and field athlete Justin Pretre started the indoor season by finishing ninth out of 130 runners in the men’s 3000m at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston. Pretre, a junior, completed the race in 7:56.30 with a final 200-meter split of 29.26 seconds.

Pretre is already fourth on California’s all-time performers list for the event, with a personal record of 3:53.44 set last season at the UW Invitational. His performance in Boston would have moved him to eighth place on Cal’s historical list if he were not already ranked higher. He also holds the fourth-best mark in school history for the indoor mile (3:59.34) and ran the opening leg of Cal’s No. 4 distance medley relay team (9:32.81). Outdoors, Pretre ranks eighth at Cal in the 1500m with a best time of 3:42.72.

“This was a great way to cap off 2025,” said Cal assistant coach Bobby Lockhart, who leads the distance squad. “I’m happy that Justin made the most of it today.”

The Golden Bears’ next team competition is scheduled for January 16 at the Spokane Sports Showcase in Spokane, Washington.
