Shellie Onstead, Director of Field Hockey for the California Golden Bears women’s field hockey team, announced the addition of Kieran Minton as an assistant coach. Minton will focus on recruiting, team preparation, and player development.
Minton comes to Cal after three seasons as an assistant coach at Kent State University. While at Kent State, he contributed to the team’s success, including their second consecutive Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular season championship in 2022. Under his guidance, Kent State players received nine all-conference awards, four NFHCA All-Region honors, two MAC Newcomer of the Year awards, and one MAC Defensive Player of the Year honor.
“We are excited to welcome Kieran to the Cal family,” Onstead said. “He stood out amongst a strong class of candidates due to his overall field hockey experience, both domestically and abroad. His time coaching at the Division One level gives him a great perspective. He will hit the ground running as we head into a competitive season and beyond.”
Minton started his coaching career in 2017 at Aberystwyth University in Wales where he worked primarily with goalkeepers for both first and second teams. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at Ohio State during the 2021 season and was a graduate assistant at Ohio University from 2019-20. Before moving to the United States in 2019 from the United Kingdom, he was part of Chester University’s first team coaching staff. Minton holds a master’s degree in coaching education from Ohio University.
“Joining Cal is a tremendous opportunity, both professionally and personally,” Minton said. “I’m eager to learn from a world-class staff, support an exceptional group of student-athletes, and be a part of a community that aligns with my values and passion for the game. Go Bears.”
Minton is originally from Rhyl, Wales. He began playing field hockey at age 11 and represented his Junior National Team at U14, U16, and U18 levels. At Aberystwyth University he played on league championship teams in 2013 and 2014 before graduating with honors with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He later played for Chester University’s league championship teams in 2016 and 2017 before finishing his playing career in 2018.
