John Ackerman, Chief Executive Officer for Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), said on April 23 that recent key indicators reflect positive developments in operations at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport, including a 43% increase in movements.
Ackerman delivered that update during a regular presentation of key airport indicators to the LAWA Board of Airport Commissioners. He outlined a snapshot of metrics that leaders use to manage daily operations at LAX and Van Nuys Airport.Â
“Notable positive highlights this month include a 43% increase in movements at Van Nuys Airport. Scores for courtesy and helpfulness of airport staff crossed the four out of five threshold, reflecting the strong work of staff. Seeing scores starting to get into the four ranges is really encouraging to see the airport performing like that. Our staff should be commended,” Ackerman said.
These monthly updates support ongoing review of performance trends and service improvements across the facilities. The board meeting format enables direct commissioner oversight of airport activities, according to LAWA.
Van Nuys Airport serves as a key general aviation reliever facility for the Los Angeles region and averages over 217,000 takeoffs and landings annually. LAX remains as an economic engine for Southern California with passenger volumes in the tens of millions each year. The airports facilitate air cargo operations that support regional supply chains and commerce. LAWA continues to track these metrics closely to guide future planning, according to statistics from both airports.
LAX processed approximately 2.29 million tons of air cargo in 2025 while maintaining its position among the busiest airports in the United States for passenger and freight traffic. Skytrax rankings for LAX reflect passenger feedback on service and facilities, with recent movement in global standings. Major U.S. airports continue to report varying recovery trends in passenger volumes and operational efficiency. Cargo growth remains an important component of the national aviation economy, according to LAWA reports.
Ackerman has over 30 years of experience in the aviation industry. He previously served as Executive Vice President of Global Strategy and Development for Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport where he drove cargo strategy and data analytics initiatives. Ackerman also held the role of Chief Commercial Officer at Denver International Airport leading customer experience and infrastructure projects.
