The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California announced that a Mexican national has been charged with assaulting a federal officer with his vehicle and illegally reentering the United States.

Federal prosecutors have charged 20-year-old Roberto Carlos Galeana-Guatemala, a Mexican national, after he allegedly struck and injured a federal officer while agents attempted to arrest him in National City, California, on November 12, 2025. According to the complaint, Homeland Security Task Force officers were executing an arrest warrant when Galeana-Guatemala accelerated toward them, hitting one agent and damaging a law enforcement vehicle. The injured officer sustained multiple contusions and a possible sternum fracture. Galeana-Guatemala, who had previously been deported in February 2024 following a conviction for alien smuggling, faces charges of assault on a federal officer, attempted assault, and illegal reentry. He remains detained without bond.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California, more than 1,200 prosecutions occurred in fiscal year 2024 involving assaults or obstruction against federal officers, primarily linked to border enforcement operations. The region continues to lead the nation in cases involving reentry after removal, accounting for roughly 20% of all such prosecutions nationwide.

The Department of Homeland Security reports that assaults on federal law enforcement officers increased by 11% between 2022 and 2024, largely concentrated in border jurisdictions. Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Border Patrol agents have seen a rise in vehicle-related assault incidents during arrest operations targeting smuggling and trafficking networks.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California is headquartered in San Diego and represents the federal government in criminal and civil litigation for one of the nation’s busiest border districts. The office prosecutes cases involving immigration crimes, violent offenses, narcotics trafficking, and national security matters. It leads multiple interagency initiatives, including the Homeland Security Task Force which targets transnational criminal organizations, human smuggling networks, and violent foreign offenders operating within the United States.
