Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed concern over President Trump’s actions, labeling them as authoritarian. In a recent op-ed, Newsom highlighted the importance of citizens holding their elected officials accountable to the Constitution.

This statement comes amidst ongoing legal battles concerning the federalization of California’s National Guard. The presence of these officers in Los Angeles has been contentious due to their training in foreign combat rather than domestic law enforcement. Additionally, increased ICE raids across California have raised concerns about targeting immigrant communities without focusing on individuals with prior criminal charges or convictions.

Newsom emphasized the risks involved: “If some of us can be snatched off the streets without a warrant, based only on suspicion or skin color, then none of us are safe.”

The op-ed is an expansion from Newsom’s “Democracy at a Crossroads” address delivered on June 10. An excerpt is available in Spanish for wider accessibility.
