Governor Gavin Newsom met with Texas state leaders to discuss the ongoing efforts by Texas Republicans to redraw congressional lines. The redistricting is seen as an attempt to keep former President Donald Trump in power without Congressional oversight. Governor Newsom emphasized the need for California to be prepared to counteract these moves.
“Donald Trump called up Governor Abbott for one simple reason: to rig the 2026 elections,” said Governor Newsom. He added that California must be ready with measures such as special elections, ballot initiatives, or legal challenges if necessary.
The meeting highlighted concerns about a special session in Texas, which was initially intended to address emergency preparedness following recent floods but has shifted focus under pressure from Trump. Representative Rafael Anchía expressed appreciation for Governor Newsom’s leadership, stating, “We met with Governor Newsom because he understands that democracy works best when elected officials serve the people.”
Senator Alex Padilla criticized Trump’s influence on Texas Republicans and vowed that California would respond through various channels if needed. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren also condemned the redistricting efforts as a blatant power grab.
Texas leaders who participated in the meeting included Representatives Rafael Anchía, Nicole Collier, Jessica Gonzalez, Ramon Romero, Ana-Maria Rodriguez Ramos, Chris Turner, and Barbara Gervin Hawkins. From California, notable figures included Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren and Congressman Ted Lieu.
The situation has prompted reactions from other political figures across the country. Arizona Senator Ruben Gallego described it as an existential threat while Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin refused to fight with constraints. New York Governor Kathy Hochul indicated openness to re-evaluating rules if others violate them.
