U.S. Representative Norma Torres, who represents California’s 35th district, addressed a range of legislative and social issues in a series of posts on January 8, 2026.
In her first post of the day, Torres announced her support for efforts to maintain affordable health care. She stated, “I signed a discharge petition to force a House vote to keep health care affordable for Americans. Today, I will vote to make sure working families, the middle class, and small businesses receive relief from rising costs.” (January 8, 2026).
Later that afternoon, Torres commemorated the anniversary of the Tucson shooting. She wrote: “On the 15th anniversary of the Tucson shooting, we honor the lives lost to gun violence and the courage of those who survived, including former Congresswoman @GabbyGiffords. I’m proud to stand with her as we fight to make our communities safer through commonsense gun reform.” (January 8, 2026).
In another post published minutes later, Torres introduced new legislation aimed at addressing recidivism among individuals convicted for actions related to January 6. She said: “I introduced the Recidivist Enhancement Act because pardons do not erase violent behavior. January 6 convictions must count toward enhanced sentencing if someone reoffends. Our democracy demands no less.” (January 8, 2026).
Norma Torres has represented California’s 35th congressional district since replacing Gloria Negrete McLeod in 2015. Prior to her tenure in Congress, she served in both chambers of California’s state legislature between 2008 and 2014. Born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965 and currently residing in Pomona at age 58, Torres holds a BA from National Labor College.
