Representative Norma Torres, who has been serving California’s 35th district in the U.S. Congress since 2015, recently expressed her concerns on social media regarding federal funding and immigration enforcement practices. Her posts highlight issues affecting federal workers and immigrant families.
On June 7, 2025, Torres addressed the impact of reduced federal funding on public servants, stating that “After years of serving their country, federal workers are being left behind.” She emphasized that the “reckless pullback in federal funding is collapsing career opportunities and devastating livelihoods,” adding that “Public service shouldn’t come with a pink slip. We must do better.” #ProtectPublicServants.
Later that day, Torres joined Representatives Jimmy Gomez, Luz Rivas, and Lou Correa at the Roybal Federal Building to demand accountability from ICE concerning their detention practices. In her tweet she noted: “Today, I joined @RepJimmyGomez, @RepLuzRivas, and @RepLouCorrea at the Roybal Federal Building to demand answers. ICE is detaining immigrant families, including moms and kids, after routine check-ins. As Members of Congress, we’re investigating this abuse of power” #InvestigateICE.
In a subsequent post on June 7th as well, Torres accused the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of obstructing congressional duties by blocking access to inspect facilities housing detained immigrants. She asserted: “DHS blocked @RepJimmyGomez, @RepLuzRivas,@RepLouCorrea,and me from doing our jobs. That’s a blatant violation of federal law.” She further insisted on their right to conduct inspections: “We have every right to inspect these facilities—and we won’t stop demanding answers or exposing this administration’s cruel treatment of vulnerable” #DemandAnswers.
Torres has been an active voice in Congress for over a decade after replacing Gloria Negrete McLeod in 2015. Born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965 and currently residing in Pomona with a BA from National Labor College.
