U.S. Representative Norma Torres, who serves California’s 35th district, announced on her social media accounts the reintroduction of the Native American Seeds Act of 2025 and called for the resignation of Secretary Hegseth over alleged war crimes.
On December 6, 2025, Torres posted, “I’m proud to reintroduce the Native American Seeds Act of 2025. This legislation helps Tribal nations protect seeds that are culturally, spiritually, and environmentally vital. Preserving these seeds isn’t just about food, it’s about protecting centuries of knowledge and”.
Later that same day, she addressed concerns regarding Secretary Hegseth’s conduct by stating, “There have to be consequences for abject war crimes… There’s a standard, there’s an ethos, there’s a belief that we are above what so many things that our enemies or others would do.” Secretary Hegseth said it himself and he broke that standard. He must resign.
On December 7, 2025, Torres provided further details about her legislative efforts with bipartisan support: “I’m proud to lead the reintroduction of the Native American Seeds Act of 2025 with @RepLaMalfa, @SenatorHeinrich, and @MikeCrapo. This bipartisan legislation helps Tribal governments protect seeds that are culturally and spiritually vital.”
Torres has represented California’s 35th congressional district since replacing Gloria Negrete McLeod in 2015. Before serving in Congress, she was a member of both the California State Assembly (2008-2013) and California Senate (2013-2014). Born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965 and currently residing in Pomona at age 58, Torres holds a Bachelor’s degree from National Labor College.
