Rep. Norma Torres, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 35th district, has voiced her strong opposition to a recent bill that she believes negatively impacts working families. Through a series of tweets on July 3, 2025, Torres expressed her disapproval and called for action against the legislation.
In a tweet posted at 13:32 UTC, Rep. Torres criticized the timing and content of the bill’s debate process. She stated “They called it a ‘win’—but started debate at 3:28AM. Why? Because this big ugly bill kicks 17 million off Medicaid, slashes food aid by 20%, and guts help for seniors.” She emphasized her stance by declaring that she would vote against it as it is “an attack on working families.”
Later at 14:51 UTC, Torres highlighted concerns raised earlier in the year by another group regarding the bill’s impact on Latino communities. She tweeted “In February, the Republican Congressional Hispanic Conference warned this bill would hurt Latino communities.” She accused those who supported the bill of betraying their constituents by stating they “sold out the very families who build this country every day.”
At 15:00 UTC, Rep. Torres mentioned receiving calls from Californians seeking ways to oppose what she described as a “cruel GOP bill.” In her tweet “My phone’s been ringing with Californians asking how to stop this cruel GOP bill,” she urged action from four specific Republicans if they truly care about California.
Norma Torres has served in Congress since replacing Gloria Negrete McLeod in 2015 and previously held positions in both the California State Assembly and Senate.
