Rep. Norma Torres, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 35th district since 2015, recently shared her views on several pressing issues via social media. Her tweets addressed topics ranging from democratic principles to economic concerns and political violence.
On June 15, Rep. Torres emphasized the foundational principle of democracy in America by stating, “For review: Today, we reaffirmed a simple truth: in America, power belongs to the people — not kings or the wealthy elite.” She extended her gratitude towards those participating in protests and underscored unity with the phrase “We’re in this together.”
In a tweet dated June 16, she highlighted economic impacts resulting from trade policies: “Thanks to Trump’s tariffs, May saw the lowest cargo volume at the Port of LA in 2+ years.” She noted significant declines in imports and exports along with reduced employment among longshore workers over a short period.
On June 17, addressing an incident of political violence, Rep. Torres expressed concern for national safety: “What happened in Minnesota is heartbreaking. We must all condemn political violence—no matter where it comes from.” She urged Americans to recognize and respond to these rising threats.
Norma Torres was born in Escuintla, Guatemala, and moved to Pomona where she currently resides. She holds a BA from National Labor College.
