U.S. Representative Norma Torres, who serves California’s 35th district, addressed a range of issues in recent posts on her official social media account, including civil rights, community service, and violence in Guatemala.
On January 19, 2026, Torres posted about the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., stating: “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fought for dignity, justice, and humanity for all.
Today, as families are torn apart, civil rights are under attack, and fear is being weaponized to divide us, honoring Dr. King’s legacy means refusing to look away and committing ourselves to the work”.
The following day on January 20, she shared her participation in a local event for Martin Luther King Jr. Day with students from Fontana Unified School District: “Honored to spend this #MLKDay serving our community alongside students from @FontanaUnified.
Through service, we put Dr. King’s legacy into action by making Valentine’s Day cards to share love and gratitude with our local veterans.”
Later that same day on January 20, Torres commented on violent incidents in Guatemala: “The prison riots and targeted attacks on police in Guatemala are tragic reminders of the violence too many face daily. My prayers are with the officers who lost their lives, their families and all victims. Guatemalans deserve safety, peace, and to live without fear.”
Torres has represented California’s 35th congressional district since 2015 after succeeding Gloria Negrete McLeod. Before her tenure in Congress began in 2015,[source] she served in both the California State Assembly (2008–2013) and the California Senate (2013–2014).[source] Born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965,[source] Torres holds a BA from National Labor College.[source]
