On August 12, 2025, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Programs Unit and Allan Hancock College held a ceremony at the Northern Branch Jail (NBJ) in Santa Maria to recognize academic achievements of incarcerated students. Sixty-three individuals were honored for completing college-level courses during their time at the facility.
The coursework covered a variety of subjects, including customer service, child development, life management, human services, and addiction studies. These classes are part of an ongoing educational initiative at NBJ that began in March 2022. Since then, more than 80 classes have been made available on-site to incarcerated students.
Allan Hancock College offers a rotating selection of courses at NBJ, while Santa Barbara City College provides similar opportunities for those housed at the Main Jail. The programs are managed by the Sheriff’s Office Programs Unit and aim to help participants develop job skills, support sobriety efforts, and prepare for reintegration into society after release.
Sheriff Bill Brown stated: “Education is one of the most powerful tools we can offer to people incarcerated in our jail system. Through our partnerships with Allan Hancock College and Santa Barbara City College, incarcerated students can take courses in a wide range of classes on subjects that can help them better understand themselves, and that better prepare them for a return to the community. They aren’t just earning certificates, they are building new futures. Each class completed represents another step away from past mistakes and towards a life with purpose, stability, and opportunity. That’s good for them, for their families, and for the safety of our community as a whole.”
The program is designed to build confidence among participants and provide them with practical skills intended to improve their prospects upon release.
