Passola Folch advances as Cal players open NCAA tennis championships

California women’s tennis player Berta Passola Folch advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship on Tuesday after defeating UCLA’s Mayu Crossley 6-1, 6-1 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. Passola Folch, ranked 113th, will next compete against Texas A&M’s Mia Kupres, who is ranked 22nd.

Mao Mushika, a junior and the team’s highest-ranked singles player at No. 17, lost a close three-set match to Charlotte’s Ni Xi by scores of 7-6(2), 6-7(3), 7-5.

Sophomores Greta Greco Lucchina and Naomi Xu also made their first appearances in the NCAA singles tournament. Greco Lucchina, ranked No. 125, was defeated by USC’s Jana Hossam with a score of 6-3, 6-1. Xu lost her match to Appalachian State’s Savannah Dada-Mascoll, who is seeded fourth and ranked No. 106 nationally; the final score was 6-3, 6-3.

Greco Lucchina and Mushika are scheduled to return for doubles play on Wednesday in the NCAA Doubles Championship. They will face Vanderbilt’s Celia-Belle Mohr and Sophia Webster in the opening round.
