The California women’s soccer team experienced its first defeat of the season on Sunday, losing 1-0 at home to Pepperdine. The match was decided in the final minutes when Pepperdine scored off a set piece.
Both teams played a physical and defensive game. Cal’s senior goalkeeper Teagan Wy recorded a season-high five saves, with four coming in the first half. Pepperdine’s Jillian Medvecky made six saves for her team.
Pepperdine broke the deadlock in the 85th minute after earning a free kick just outside the box. Tabitha LaParl delivered a cross that Lilly Stewart headed in for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Cal had 11 shots compared to Pepperdine’s eight and put six shots on target, marking their highest shot selection so far this season.
Lizzie Vranesh returned to play for Cal after missing all of last season due to a torn ACL. She received a standing ovation from teammates and fans as she stepped onto the field for her first appearance in 660 days.
The Golden Bears will next play on Thursday against Utah Valley in Orem, Utah, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
