Rep. Norma Torres, a U.S. Congresswoman representing California’s 35th district, recently shared her views on federal policy, higher education, and the events of January 6 through a series of posts on her official social media account.
On July 24, 2025, Torres addressed concerns about deportation agreements with certain countries. She stated, “My amendment is simple: No federal dollars should be used to strike deportation deals with countries our own government warns Americans not to travel to. We must protect our values and our national security. We should never send people to places they don’t know and where their”.
The following day, on July 25, Torres highlighted her engagement with higher education leaders in California. She wrote, “I had the pleasure of meeting the new Chancellor of UC Riverside to talk about student success and groundbreaking research. We discussed our shared goals and how I can continue fighting in Congress to secure the federal funding they deserve.”
Later that same day, Torres commented on ongoing debates regarding the January 6 Capitol attack. She posted, “I was in the Capitol on January 6. I don’t need a Republican rewrite. I lived it. What House Republicans are doing isn’t oversight. It’s an effort to undermine accountability and shield those responsible for attacking our democracy.

Torres has represented California’s 35th district in Congress since 2015 after succeeding Gloria Negrete McLeod ([source](https://bioguide.congress.gov/search/bio/T000474)). Before her tenure in Congress, she served in both the California State Assembly from 2008 to 2013 and the California Senate from 2013 to 2014 ([source](https://www.congress.gov/member/norma-torres/T000474)). Born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965, Torres currently resides in Pomona and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from National Labor College.
