U.S. Representative Norma Torres, who serves California’s 35th district, recently addressed a range of issues on her social media account, including congressional oversight of ICE detention centers and press freedom in Guatemala.
On July 30, 2025, Torres posted a message expressing gratitude to her outgoing interns: “As this cohort of interns completes their time with us, I want to thank each of them for their hard work, dedication, and passion. Their contributions have strengthened our team and inspired us all. Wishing them continued success on their journeys ahead!”
Later that day, she criticized the Trump administration’s policy regarding access to immigration detention facilities by members of Congress. On July 30, 2025, she wrote: “The Trump administration is blocking Members of Congress from inspecting ICE detention centers. That’s illegal. I’m not staying silent while people are held in dangerous, inhumane conditions and the public is kept in the dark. I joined the lawsuit to defend our right to oversight”.
On July 31, 2025, Torres highlighted concerns about press freedom in Central America after meeting with the son of José Rubén Zamora—a Guatemalan journalist detained for three years. She stated: “We met with the son of Guatemalan journalist José Rubén Zamora, who has spent 3 years in detention as prosecutors pursue baseless charges designed to silence dissent. Violating due process to punish the press is an attack on democracy itself.”
Norma Torres has represented California’s 35th District since entering Congress in 2015 after succeeding Gloria Negrete McLeod. Before her tenure in Congress, she served in both the California State Assembly and Senate between 2008 and 2014. Born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965 and now residing in Pomona at age 58, Torres holds a BA from National Labor College.
