Rep. Norma Torres, U.S. Congresswoman representing California’s 35th district, used her social media platform this week to address topics ranging from Labor Day celebrations to a recent court ruling on troop deployment and ongoing concerns about a potential government shutdown.
On September 1, 2025, Torres acknowledged the contributions of workers in her district and beyond, stating: “This Labor Day, I celebrate the hardworking people of CA-35! From manufacturing to education and beyond, you are the backbone of our economy. Together, we’re building a stronger, fairer, and more prosperous America.”
The following day, she responded to a legal decision regarding federal troop deployments in Los Angeles: “A judge just ruled Trump’s troop deployment to LA was unlawful. Militarizing cities isn’t policing — it’s a threat to democracy. LA and the LAPD must be fully reimbursed for the costs of Trump’s chaos.” (September 2, 2025).
Later that evening, Torres commented on congressional proceedings as lawmakers returned from recess: “Congress is back in session, and once again, Republicans are risking a government shutdown. Instead of working on real solutions, they’re focused on political distractions. I’m committed to delivering for working families in #CA35 and across the country.” (September 2, 2025).
Torres has represented California’s 35th District in Congress since 2015 after succeeding Gloria Negrete McLeod. She previously served in both the California State Assembly and Senate before being elected to Congress. Born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965 and currently residing in Pomona at age 58, Torres holds a BA from National Labor College.
