Rep. Norma Torres, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 35th district since 2015, recently shared her thoughts on a series of significant events via social media. Her posts addressed concerns about military presence, civil rights, and national identity.
On June 9, 2025, Rep. Torres expressed her apprehension regarding military involvement in civilian matters by stating “The Pentagon is mobilizing Marines to confront civilians on the streets of Los Angeles.” She criticized this action as an unnecessary escalation and emphasized that such military force should not be used to silence citizens seeking justice.
In another post made on the same day, she celebrated the release of David Huerta from detention with “David Huerta is free—and back in the arms of his wife where he belongs.” Torres condemned the detention of peaceful advocates and reaffirmed her commitment to continue fighting for justice and against attempts to silence voices like Huerta’s.
Later that day, Rep. Torres reflected on contrasting reactions to symbols at protests. She questioned why some individuals are more disturbed by Mexican flags at peaceful protests than Confederate flags during violent incidents by stating “I was in the Capitol when armed insurrectionists waved Confederate flags through our halls.” She underscored that the true threat does not come from minority communities.
Rep. Norma Torres has a background in public service having served previously in both the California State Assembly and Senate before her current role in Congress.
