Representative Norma Torres, who has served California’s 35th District in the U.S. Congress since 2015, recently shared a series of statements on social media addressing local and national issues. Torres, originally from Escuintla, Guatemala and now residing in Pomona, reflected on legislative legacies and voiced concerns about federal actions impacting public institutions.
On July 14, 2025, Torres attended an event at the University of LaVerne celebrating Rep. Grace Napolitano’s congressional archives. She stated, “It was an honor to join family, friends, and the University of LaVerne community to celebrate the unveiling of Rep. Grace Napolitano’s congressional archives. Her decades of leadership and mentorship shaped so many of us — and now her legacy will inspire students and researchers”.
Later that day, Torres commented on a recent Supreme Court decision regarding the Department of Education. On July 14, she posted: “The Supreme Court just cleared the way for Trump to move forward with dismantling the Department of Education and laying off 1,400 workers. Undermining public education isn’t reform. It’s a deliberate effort to weaken the institutions that serve working families.”
On July 15, Torres addressed proposed Republican budget cuts affecting housing, transit, and safety programs in her district. She wrote: “Republicans are gutting housing, slashing transit, and cutting safety programs—then calling it ‘fiscal responsibility.’ In the Inland Empire, that means evictions, stalled infrastructure, and working families left to fend for themselves. I’m not backing down.”
Torres has represented California’s 35th District since succeeding Gloria Negrete McLeod in 2015 after serving in both chambers of California’s legislature. She holds a BA from National Labor College.
