Rep. Norma Torres, a U.S. Congress member representing California’s 35th district, recently addressed several pressing issues on social media. Her comments reflect her concerns about military and immigration policies.
On June 9, 2025, Torres criticized the deployment of troops to Los Angeles without adequate preparation. She stated, “This is what happens when political stunts replace strategy. Troops sent to LA on a whim—no beds, no briefing, no plan—just an impulsive order to confront civilians.” She emphasized that servicemembers should not be used as “props” and deserve better treatment than being involved in actions lacking strategic planning.
In another post on June 10, 2025, she expressed disagreement with Tom Homan regarding ICE raids in Los Angeles. Torres argued that these actions do not enhance safety but rather incite disorder: “I absolutely disagree with Tom Homan. ICE raids in LA aren’t about safety — they bring chaos.” She held former President Trump’s policies responsible for endangering communities and injuring local officers.
Later that day, Torres voiced her concerns over racial profiling and detentions by agencies meant to offer protection. On June 10, she shared her experience of being denied entry into a detention center for oversight purposes: “People are scared — and they should be… I was blocked from entering a detention center to conduct oversight.” Her statement highlights the systemic issues treating human lives as expendable.
Norma Torres has served in Congress since replacing Gloria Negrete McLeod in 2015 and has a history of legislative service in California’s state government prior to her current role.
