Rep. Norma Torres, a U.S. Congress member representing California’s 35th district since 2015, recently took to social media to express her concerns regarding a controversial legislative proposal. Known for her previous roles in the California State Assembly and Senate, Torres continues to advocate for the interests of her constituents.
On July 3, 2025, Rep. Torres highlighted Leader Jeffries’ speech on the House floor, where he addressed what she referred to as the “Big Backstabbing Bill.” She urged everyday Americans to make their voices heard against this bill.
In another post from the same day, she described the bill as detrimental to jobs and healthcare while benefiting the ultra-wealthy at the expense of working families. She stated that she led ten former mayors in Congress in calling on Speaker Johnson to halt this legislation.
Further expressing her opposition, Torres fact-checked claims related to veterans’ benefits in California. On July 3, she tweeted about 115,000 veterans relying on SNAP and one in ten depending on Medicaid for healthcare. She argued that the proposed bill would significantly cut these essential services.
Norma Torres has been a vocal advocate for her community since taking office after Gloria Negrete McLeod in 2015. Born in Escuintla, Guatemala, and now residing in Pomona, she holds a BA from National Labor College.
