Rep. Norma Torres, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 35th district since 2015, has been vocal on social media regarding recent legislative issues. Her tweets highlight her concerns about government priorities and the actions of her Republican colleagues.
On July 3, 2025, Rep. Torres tweeted about the disparity in government spending between social welfare programs and contracts awarded to billionaires. She stated, “SNAP gives kids, seniors & veterans $6 a day to eat. Elon Musk gets $8 million a day in government contracts.” She criticized the GOP for prioritizing wealthy individuals over working families.
Later that day, she addressed the absence of Republican lawmakers during critical discussions in Congress. In her tweet at 16:35 UTC, she noted “While Democrats fight for the lives of everyday Americans, look who’s missing: our Republican colleagues.” She questioned their commitment to their constituents by pointing out empty seats during important debates.
In another post at 17:45 UTC on July 3rd, Rep. Torres praised Leader Jeffries for his efforts against what she described as a harmful bill. She remarked that he spoke on behalf of various marginalized groups including single mothers and immigrants. According to her tweet “He didn’t speak for himself… For every American this cruel, shameful bill would gut.”
Norma Torres was born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965 and resides in Pomona. Before serving in Congress, she was part of both the California State Assembly and Senate.
