Rep. Norma Torres, a U.S. Congresswoman representing California’s 35th district since 2015, posted a series of tweets on July 30, 2025, voicing opposition to proposed legislation she says would reduce access to affordable health care in California.
In her first post on July 30, Torres stated: “We should be protecting and expanding health care—not gutting it. This fight isn’t over. #ProtectOurCare #CoveredCA”.
She continued her criticism in a second tweet the same day: “California and Democrats have worked hard to expand access to affordable care. This bill would rip that progress apart—harming families, seniors, and young people alike.”
Addressing the rationale behind the proposed changes, Torres wrote: “This isn’t about saving money. It’s about making it harder for families to access care. More red tape. Higher costs. Fewer people insured. That’s the goal of this bill.”
Torres has represented California’s 35th district in Congress since succeeding Gloria Negrete McLeod in 2015 and previously served in both the California State Assembly and Senate between 2008 and 2014. She was born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965 and currently resides in Pomona with a degree from National Labor College.
Her remarks come as debates continue over state and federal efforts to alter or repeal portions of health care policy impacting Covered California—the state’s health insurance marketplace—and broader efforts by Democrats to increase access to affordable health coverage.
