U.S. Representative Norma Torres, who serves California’s 35th district, posted a series of tweets on July 30, 2025, criticizing proposed health care legislation by Republicans and warning of its potential impact on millions of Americans.
In her first post at 15:25 UTC, Torres stated: “60 years after Medicare & Medicaid became law, Trump gutted them. His Big, Ugly Bill will strip health care from 15M people—2.3M in California. 28 rural hospitals will shut down. This is a betrayal of working families. We’re fighting to stop these cuts and save your care.”
Later the same day at 15:54 UTC, she added: “If you make $60,000 or less, get ready to pay an extra $200/month just to keep your health insurance. That’s nearly $2,400 more a year—for basic coverage.”
In another tweet posted simultaneously at 15:54 UTC, Torres continued her criticism: “Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill is a direct attack on affordable health care. It forces 2 million people on Covered California to cut through more red tape and pay more—or lose coverage entirely.”
Norma Torres has represented California’s 35th congressional district since replacing Gloria Negrete McLeod in 2015 and previously served in both the California State Assembly and Senate. Born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965 and now residing in Pomona, Torres holds a BA from National Labor College.
