Rep. Norma Torres, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 35th district since 2015, recently expressed her concerns on various issues through a series of tweets. Her posts addressed matters ranging from religious tolerance to education policy and immigration enforcement.
On June 6, 2025, Rep. Torres criticized her colleague’s remarks regarding a Sikh prayer as “offensive and unacceptable.” She emphasized the importance of religious freedom by stating, “Freedom of religion built this country, and Sikh-Americans are valued members of our communities.” She further declared that “Intolerance has no place in Congress.”
Later that day, she turned her attention to an issue concerning public education. In another tweet posted on June 6, 2025, she addressed President Trump’s request for the Supreme Court to approve layoffs at the Department of Education. Rep. Torres argued that this was not merely a staffing decision but an attack on students and civil rights: “I won’t let public education be dismantled.”
In a subsequent tweet dated June 7, 2025, Rep. Torres expressed support for David Huerta and SEIU California against actions taken by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). She condemned ICE’s behavior as “outrageous and disgusting,” stating that peaceful protests should not be met with intimidation: “Mr. Huerta must be released immediately.”
Rep. Norma Torres was born in Escuintla, Guatemala in 1965 and resides in Pomona. Before serving in Congress, she was part of the California State Assembly from 2008 to 2013 and the California Senate from 2013 to 2014.
