The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place on May 6 in the city of San Diego.

Authorities said that at about 11:00 a.m., San Diego Police Department officers found an occupied stolen vehicle on Telocote Road. When officers attempted a felony vehicle stop, the driver fled, leading to a pursuit across multiple freeways and surface streets. The chase was called off for community safety reasons but resumed shortly after when officers located the stopped vehicle again and tried to contact the driver, who fled a second time.

Officers deployed tire deflation devices on Derby Farms Road near Steeple Chase Row as the suspect approached. According to officials, “Fearing for their safety, one officer discharged one round, striking the stolen vehicle.” The suspect continued fleeing until being taken into custody at Ted Williams Parkway and Highland Ranch Road. No injuries were reported among officers or the suspect.

The suspect faces charges including assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, and felony reckless evading. Per county protocol, “the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit responded to the scene and is conducting the officer‑involved shooting investigation.” Detectives are gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses while examining all aspects of what happened.

“The investigative and review process for officer‑involved shootings is comprehensive,” authorities said. Once completed by the Homicide Unit, findings will be submitted to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for review regarding any potential criminal liability by involved officers. An administrative review will also be conducted by San Diego Police Department leadership regarding firearm discharge during this incident.
