San José Fire Department announces recruitment for firefighter academy beginning January 2027

The San José Fire Department announced on May 11 that it is seeking applicants for its upcoming Firefighter Recruit Academy, scheduled to begin in January 2027.

This recruitment effort is aimed at individuals interested in serving their community and starting a career in fire service. The department offers comprehensive training covering firefighting, emergency medical response, and essential lifesaving skills. Recruits will receive instruction, teamwork opportunities, and hands-on experience to prepare them for a successful career as firefighters.

Compensation for the Firefighter Recruit classification is $51.92 per hour or $4,153.25 bi-weekly. Upon completion of the academy, graduates move into the Firefighter Step 1 position with compensation of $4,775.08 bi-weekly or $124,151.98 annually. Additional premium pays are available for eligible employees including paramedic pay, bilingual pay, and education incentive pay. Employees also receive an approximate one percent ongoing non-pensionable compensation pay.
