City officials in San Jose announced on April 23 that construction is beginning for the Senter Road Safety Improvements Earmark Project, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for April 24. The event will take place at the northeast corner of Senter Road and Balfour Drive, marking the start of upgrades designed to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users.

The improvements are funded by a $10 million earmark secured in 2022 by State Assemblymember Ash Kalra. According to city leaders, the project will upgrade temporary plastic bikeway delineators to concrete barriers, add lighting along the corridor, plant trees, and improve transit stops. These enhancements aim to make one of San Jose’s busy streets safer and more welcoming for all community members.

Councilmember Bien Doan from District 7, Director of Transportation John Ristow, Director of Public Works Matthew Loesch, and community resident Orlana Mejia are expected to attend the ceremony. The City of San Jose aims to deliver quality public services and foster a safe, vibrant community for its residents, businesses and visitors according to its official mission page.

San Jose promotes cultural diversity through initiatives such as the Japanese Friendship Garden and Mexican Heritage Plaza as noted on its historical context page. The city also maintains historic sites like the San Jose Historical Museum in Kelley Park which features relocated buildings and collections according to city records. Unique replicas such as statehouse models constructed in 1899 and again in 1949 reflect this commitment as documented by city sources.

The City of San Jose serves neighborhoods throughout Santa Clara Valley including various historical districts according to its historical context page. The city’s government consists of an at-large elected mayor alongside eleven councilmembers representing specific districts according to its official charter page.
