San José State baseball lost 4-1 to San Diego State on May 10 in the final game of a three-game series at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Jake McCoy led the Spartans with his 43rd run batted in of the season, but it was not enough to secure a win.

The outcome matters as it determines momentum and standings for both teams late in the season. The Spartans now hold a record of 21-27 overall and 8-13 in Mountain West play, while San Diego State improved to 32-20 overall and 15-6 in conference.

San José State took an early lead when Alex Fernandes was hit by a pitch and Peyton Rowles reached on a fielder’s choice before McCoy singled home Rowles for a quick advantage. However, San Diego State responded immediately with two runs in their half of the first inning from a bases-loaded single and sacrifice fly. Despite opportunities with runners on base—including Brent Cota’s double and Fernandes’ triple—the Spartans were unable to capitalize further.

The Aztecs extended their lead with an RBI single in the third inning and another run from an RBI double in the seventh, setting up their eventual victory. Spartan starter Dylan Smith took the loss after allowing three runs over four innings pitched. Relievers EJ McGrew delivered two scoreless frames, while Kyle Calzadiaz struck out four batters over two innings but allowed one run.

Fernandes achieved his fifth triple of the season, moving him into sixth place all-time at SJSU for career triples with eleven total. He also extended his hitting streak to eleven games. Caballero went three-for-three at bat with a walk and an RBI, while Cota recorded his ninth triple this year. Calzadiaz increased his season strikeout total to fifty-five.

Looking ahead, San José State will host Fresno State for another three-game series beginning Thursday, May 14 at Excite Ballpark.
