Santa Barbara County deputies arrest wanted man after standoff in Santa Maria

Deputies in Santa Maria apprehended a wanted suspect after a standoff lasting about four hours on August 13, 2025. According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, deputies located Victor Manuel Ayala Sanchez, age 30, at a residence in the 1100-block of East Sunset Avenue around 11:32 a.m.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered several other people inside the home, including a child. The Sheriff’s Office reported that additional resources were called to the scene, such as a K9 team, Special Enforcement Team, and Crisis Negotiation Team. These teams assisted in safely evacuating all occupants except for the suspect.

“In the hours that followed, deputies placed several phone calls to the suspect as well as giving him verbal commands to safely surrender. Deputies eventually entered the residence and found the suspect hiding in an attic area where he was eventually taken into custody without further incident at approximately 3:08 p.m.”

Authorities said Victor Manuel Ayala Sanchez will be booked at Northern Branch Jail on outstanding felony warrants. Charges include brandishing a firearm, robbery, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, gang enhancement, evading police, criminal threats, assault with a deadly weapon, and carjacking. He also faces additional misdemeanor charges and will be held without bail.
