Santa Barbara inmate dies after being found unresponsive in jail cell

An incarcerated man from Santa Barbara died at a local hospital after being found unresponsive in his jail cell, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office. On January 22, 2026, around 4:00 p.m., custody staff discovered Jonathan Lundahl, age 65, unresponsive during routine checks of his single-person cell. Authorities reported there were no signs of trauma.

Emergency personnel responded and transported Lundahl to an area hospital. He later suffered cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at approximately 11:11 p.m.

Lundahl had been arrested by the Sheriff’s Office on September 24, 2025, facing a felony charge of elder abuse. His next court hearing was scheduled for February 11, 2026.

The Sheriff’s Office stated: “Preliminarily this death appears to be the result of natural causes; however, a full death investigation is underway to determine an official cause and manner. In accordance with policy, an administrative investigation is also in progress.”
