The City of Sacramento announced on May 1 that the Shop 916 gift card promotion is returning in time for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and graduation season. Shoppers who purchase Shop 916 gift cards between now and July 15 can receive bonus spending amounts with their purchases.

The program aims to encourage residents to support local businesses during a busy retail period. Valerie Mamone, the City’s project development manager for Shop 916, said, “The Shop 916 program connects residents with local retailers while supporting small businesses across the city. This promotion provides an added benefit for those planning purchases for upcoming celebrations.”

Gift cards are available at shop916local.com. The promotion allows up to three bonus cards per purchaser, which must be used by August 31. Since its launch in 2021, more than $1.3 million in Shop 916 gift cards and bonus cards have been sold and nearly 20,000 gift cards have circulated among the program’s participating merchants.

Shop 916 also features a volume discount program designed for organizations purchasing in bulk for employee recognition or promotional purposes; however, current promotions do not apply to these bulk purchases and card fees are waived under this program.

Local storefront retailers within Sacramento with no more than 500 full-time equivalent employees can participate in Shop 916 at no cost. The initiative excludes home-based businesses, franchises, liquor-only stores and cannabis businesses from eligibility. Interested businesses can sign up through shop916local.com.

Mamone said she hopes the ongoing promotion will continue connecting shoppers with local merchants while supporting small business growth throughout Sacramento.
