California State Sen. Melissa Melendez of District 28 has introduced SCR5, a bill that could cease the state of emergency that has been declared by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
“Once the state of emergency is declared, it defines the environment that we live in,” Melendez told Jason Austell of Good Morning San Diego, KUSI.com.
According to Melendez, the state of emergency doesn’t end until one of two things happens, the governor declares that it’s over, or a legislature declaring its termination.
She said the bill aims to take away the one-man rule and allow the counties to determine what is best for them. “It’s time to get back to local control,” she said.
She said that schools should have reopened long ago since the CDC said that they are safe to open.
“We’ve been having a hard time getting the data and the science from the governor's office.”
Melendez further said that the kids are not happy - they are upset. She added that kids should also go back to sports.
She also hopes to get bipartisan support. “It’s time the legislature bands together.”
"There are Democrats who feel we should do this," Melendez said. "But (they) won’t come out publicly and say so, and I think (they) need encouragement from their constituents.”
