Prior to the scheduled vote on a bill to reopen schools, Assembly Member Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) remarked on Twitter, “the Assembly plans to vote on a fake school reopening bill.”
“There will also be a vote on my (school reopening) amendment to make it real: 5-day per week in-person instruction available to all California students within two weeks,” he added.
Yet, the vote didn’t happen.
“Today’s vote on opening schools was postponed. Because, you know, the health and well-being of our kids can wait,” Kiley wrote on Twitter.
Kiley stated that he asked the governor for a special session, saying “as closed-door ‘negotiations’ to reopen schools drag on, it's worth noting I asked Gov. Newsom to call a Special Session in August to address the issue with my entire caucus signing on.”
Kiley ended his tweet with how the governor ignored the request.
“Newsom refused,” he said.
His Open California Schools Act calls for ‘full-time in-person instruction’ within two weeks from the time that ‘state and county health orders’ permit it,” EdSource reported.
According to EdSource, SB 86 and AB 86, “include $2 billion in incentives to encourage districts to sign on, and requires that school districts negotiate safety agreements and institute rigorous testing of students and staff to qualify for the money.”
SB 86 needs crucial changes to allow for a safe, effective and equitable return to in-person instruction statewide, the California School Boards Association stated.
