The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced the allocation of $50 million in grants for 15 projects aimed at supporting habitat restoration efforts to enhance the salmon population in various regions of California. These funds are part of a broader initiative to revive California's salmon populations and align with Governor Newsom's Salmon Strategy.
Governor Newsom emphasized the significance of these investments, stating, "These new investments are a key component to how we will restore California’s salmon population for the long-term, and we’re doing it in partnership with the local communities and tribes who have been dealing with these issues for generations."
CDFW Director Chuck Bonham highlighted the importance of the timing of these projects in addressing climate challenges, stating, "Timing is everything and we have an opportunity to address the unrelenting threat of extreme climate and weather patterns through supporting these projects."
Several projects will directly contribute to Governor Newsom's Salmon Strategy, with a focus on collaborating with local communities and tribes to ensure the sustainability of natural resources for future generations.
The grants include support for initiatives such as the Juvenile Salmonid Collection System, Beaver Restoration Program, and various meadow and wetland restoration projects, all aimed at enhancing habitat and promoting the well-being of salmon populations across the state.
Particularly, Chief Caleen Sisk of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe expressed eagerness to continue the restoration work for the McCloud River, emphasizing the vital role of wild salmon in the ecosystem and the tribe's survival.
The awarded funds will also aid in acquiring and preserving critical areas for ecological conservation, as highlighted by Charnna Gilmore, Executive Director for the Scott River Watershed Council, who expressed excitement about the potential benefits for wildlife and habitats in the region.
The diverse array of projects receiving funding underscores California's commitment to environmental stewardship and the restoration of vital habitats for salmon and other wildlife species.
